Los Jarritos

We spent my birthday over at Los Jarritos, a friendly and lowkey sitdown Mexican restaurant over on 21st and South Van Ness in the Mission/SF. I am pleased to report that its fare is very tasty, well-priced and the overall vibe positive.

Salsa's obviously a key ingredient in the success of a Mexican spot and Los Jarritos does it well with their standout red. Decent heat, nice consistency, and a great rounded flavor. Chips were not too thick, well salted and slightly warm. Really good, actually.

Their Chicken Mole dinner is excellent. They use only white chicken breast meat and smother it with a creamy, chocolatey mole that was deep in flavor and quite rich. One of the better Mission moles out there. Homemade refried beans are really delicious.

Enchiladas were good as well, the chicken better than the pork, which was a bit fatty. Rice and fresh lettuce accompanies all the dinners and is good.

Guacamole was good, but at $5.95 we expected a little more guac in the bowl. The nachos were pretty good as well, lots of gooey cheese and refrieds.

This charming restaurant is very clean, well-lit and has a good jukebox full of latin favorites. It's got a lot of character and service was very courteous and our server was super nice. A perfect spot for an inexpensive Mexican meal when you want more than a burrito but don't want to sacrifice authenticity. It also looked like a good place for somewhat big groups if you want to go out with a lot of folks.
