So, the multi-coloured "Xiao Long Bao" (Shanghainese soup dumplings) which come in 8 flavours comes to Kuala Lumpur! Invented by Singapore's Paradise Group restaurant chain, the "8 Flavours Xiao Long Bao" consisted of the following flavours: Original, Ginseng, Foie gras, Black truffles, Crab-roe, Cheese, Garlic and Sichuanese.
Tastewise, I liked the original one best. Not too sure about all the other flavours - ginseng and black truffles were okay-ish, cheese and crab-roe were absurdly rich and cloying, the garlic one was pungent and a turn-off, whilst the Sichuanese one should *not* be served in *any* eatery: it was simply *awful*!! The overwhelming Sichuan peppercorn flavour numbed my mouth - it was like swallowing toilet disinfectant. Yech!
XLB aside, the ambience was marvellous (like all Paradise Group restaurants), wait-staff (garbed in shiny costumes which looked like a blend of Mongol-Romulan) were efficient and friendly. I'll come back here for the normal XLB and other dishes in there. P.S. - the tofu-century egg appetiser was fabulous: silken-soft tofu, topped with chopped century egg which lent the dish an intoxicating flavour, finely-chopped scallions and lightly basted with light soysauce.
