I went to kitchen 82 monday night, it just opened so i anticipated there would be some kinks but was in the mood to try something new in the neighborhood. I havent been to kitchen 22 so im not sure if they are exactly the same.
We arrived at about 745, the restaurant was pretty packed and we were told there would be a 30 minute wait so we got a drink at the bar. The room is nice, warm and slightly modern but definitely a neighborhood feel. The bartender was very friendly, drinks were good, but pricey. We were finally seated at the banquette about 50 minutes later.
Things started a little slow, no waiter came over to us until we asked one if she was our waiter. Water was slow too - this is all expected for such a new place. The bread was good, bagettes served with three little bowls - one was hummus i guess, olives and sea salt, the hummus was ok - i was starving - but i would have liked some butter.
Its a $25 prix fixe with five choices for each course. for apps, i ordered the carpaccio, paper thin slices with lentils in the middle, the meat was sort of overpowered by the dressing, they should have used less dressing for such thin slices of meat. my boyfriend ordered the seared tuna, it was good but pretty standard. The presentation was more exciting than the dish.
For entrees I had seared salmon served over sauteed spinich, the salmon was nice, could have been a little more rare but i liked the sauce and the spinich a lot.
Boyfriend had hanger steak, it was sliced and served over mashed potatos in a red wine type of sauce, his was delicious. Flavorful and tender meat.
for dessert i had the butterscotch pudding - i liked it but it wasnt anything to rave about, my boyfriend had the brownie which was oddly rock hard. it wasnt stale or frozen it was just very solid, neither of us were particulary fond of this.
The wine list is small, 5 whites and 5 reds in each of the $25 and $35 categories. They were out of the wine i wanted but the one we got was fine.
All in all, ill probably go back but im not running back, especially for a 50 minute wait. if we hadnt been lucky enough to get seats at the bar, i wouldnt have waited, its a very small bar area. I definitely would not bring anyone who is particularly picky as the menu is so limited and they wont do substitutions.
