Tried a new-to-me apple from Berkeley Bowl last night: "Jazz," a trademarked name for the recently developed Scifresh variety, a cross between Royal Gala and Braeburn.
Great apple: as crunchy and juicy as most varieties in peak season, more complex flavor than a Gala, sweeter than a Braeburn. Label says organic and produce of USA; I think the sign said they were from Washington. $2.19 a pound but worth it. The Bowl keeps them in a cooler, if you find them at a store that has them at room temperature the texture might not be as perfect.
In season, I prefer Braeburns, but the ones I've tried lately (including one from the Bowl yesterday) have been mushy.
