I had heard from several people that Ichi is a good spot for sushi, but since I'm not a huge sushi fan or connoisseur, I didn't get around to trying it until this week. Two of us shared the following:
Albacore Avocado Roll
Kasu Gindara (Black Cod marinated in sake lees)
I thought the miso soup was very good, slightly earthier in flavor than the average Japanese place. Everything else was really only OK. I did see many people ordering sashimi here, and I did think the fish quality was very good, so perhaps maybe we ordered wrong. But I felt overall unexcited, compared to a recent sushi-focused meal at Ebisu (in the Inner Sunset) which I enjoyed much more.
The black cod was good, especially the bits that had crispier skin portions that had captured the sweet lee flavor, but the portion was quite small for $10.75. I feel like I have had a similar style (and priced) dish at Minako Organic and the portion was larger. It was about 6 bites of fish, total.
Service was friendly, it's a nice neighborhood vibe, so I can see why people like this place. So, if others like it, I'm curious to hear what's good!
