I love a good Thai Town teardown. I've hit Red Corner Asia, Thai Palms, and some of the others in the area, so my companion and I tried Hollywood Thai last night; a non-descript locale that, word has it, makes a mean bbq pork. We didn't have huge appetites, but decided to give it a shot. Here's what we found:
Place: Hollywood Thai, Thursday, 6/22 - 7:00 PM
Myself + 1 guest (My darling Aussie friend P)
Ambiance - C-
That's not why you hit a place like this; the only notable design element - they really like mirrors.
Service - C
We had a vapid, uber-young girl more intent on looking at herself in the mirror than taking our order. But she was sweet, so we forgave her :)
Food (Presentation) - C-
Nothing special, but not hideous.
Food (Taste) - B-
Not too shabby!
Wine/Drinks - C+
They actually have beer and wine (very limited, but still - yay!)
Value - B
Decent food, decent prices.
Overall Experience - C
Average. There are better joints in Thai Town to enjoy.
We only had 3 dishes (and 4 beers - priorities!)
1) Shrimp Tempura - 4 fat guys were served with a too-sweet sauce - this failed the more breading than shrimp test, so I wasn't blown away.
2) BBQ Pork - We weren't lied to - this was really good. Very succulent pork slices with a tasty sauce. Spicy, but not overwhelming - made my tongue curl. In a good way.
3) Bamboo Shoots Salad - This was so ass-kicking my eyes pulsed every time I took a bite. Awesome! Hardcore Thai spices with sauteed bamboo shoots and scallions - this was served warm, and had a truly amazing flavor. A unique (to me) rendition of the Papaya Salad. Definitely recommend this guy.
+ Sticky Rice (sub-par)
Bill including tax and tip (for 4 beers, 1 appetizer, 1 salad, 1 entree, + sticky rice) - $46.
So, no major disappointment, but it wasn't really a full-on Thai Town standout.
