Just came back from lunch at Green Papaya and was totally blown away. Like most Thai restaurants, it's got alot of stuff on the menu, and it's hard to weed out the restaurants specialty. So I'm sharing my review of this restaurant, but I'd also like to hear from other people the other things they've tried on the menu so I can order something different next time.
Since it was called the Green papaya, we could only assume that their papaya salad was going to be awesome....and it was. My favorite GP salad thus far has been from Ruen Paar in Thaitown, but this one beat it out.
The papaya was so fresh and crisp, the salted shrimp weren't too funky, but with just the right bite of brine, and the peanuts were freshly roasted. The lime dressing was an excellent balance of tart and sweet.
Also had the glass noodles with Shrimp and my favorite, chicken and basil. Some restaurants use white meat and the chunks get really dried out....but this one was superb, not too finely minced, with a right balance of heat and basil.
For dessert, we couldn't pass up mango and sweet coconut rice....and it was supberb. The mango was so perfectly ripe, and the sweet rice had the perfect bite...not too mushy (as it sometimes get when they cook a giant batch and then just nuke it before serving). I'm not sure, but I'm pretty convinced the rice was fresh cooked, and the salty/sweet coconut sauce on top was the exact balance one would expect from such a dish served in Bangkok.
I'm so bummed I live so far away...I'm looking forward to going back and trying other things on the menu. Look forward to hearing menu suggestions from fellow Chowhounds....
