After reading positive reviews on this board, we gave it a try. We really wanted to find a good Italian place something along the lines of Angelini Osteria, fairly close to home. Maybe it was an off day.
First, the spongy, nearly tasteless bread should have tipped us off. (It was warmed, though).
The lentil soup, while flavorful, was overcooked to a mushy (not pureed) consistency.
The Gale's salad was made of very fresh mixed greens, quite good in themselves; the dressing had an odd clumpy texture that was just okay in flavor.
The margherita pizza toppings were pretty good, the crust had the institutional quality of something from a box.
The potato gnocchi with porchetta sounded wonderful; it consisted of large gluey gobs of gnocchi with porchetta made from mediocre pork mixed in.
The fettucini carbonara with pancetta was the biggest disappointment. The same glue seemed to have been used in the pasta, and the sad little lumps of pancetta did not compensate.
I am sorry to post this but do so only as a warning to others who may love the food at a place of Angelini Osteria's caliber, as we do: I wouldn't spend your money at Gale's. We were very sorry that we did. The ideas are in search of a chef who can implement them. The operative word is institutional.
