Friend's Portuguese Restaurant in Lowell, MA: Review

I just checked this place out the other day after hearing many rave reviews, it did not disappoint. My girlfriend and I got there early on Tuesday night, the dining room was pretty much empty, but the bar area seemed busy. Atmosphere is very nice, smooth black stone floors, cream colored walls with a lot of hanging plants and Portuguese decorations, actually a much nicer room than I expected. This spot has been a variety of divey bars over the years but would fit in nicely in Cambridge or Boston now. There is also patio seating out back which will be nice in warmer weather.

The friendly server was helpful with the menu suggesting some of their specialties. We were served some great Portuguese rolls and a dish of good black olives to start, a nice touch. They have a nice selection of inexpensive wine, much of it Portuguese. We went with a bottle of Vinho Verde for $15! At that price I would have been happy with anything drinkable, but it was actually very good, dry, a little bubbly, very good with the spicy, garlicky, food.

My girlfriend ordered the steak tips which were very good, cooked perfectly medium with just a slightly exotic marinade which I couldn't quite place. These came with handcut fries and rice w/parsley. I went for the Shrimp Mocambico, eight large shrimp in a spicy garlic, white wine, parsley sauce. These were very good and came with rice as well but instead of fries had thin sliced fried potatoes which were awesome, almost like triple thick kettle chips. There were a lot of other things on the menu that looked good, a few seafood stews, pork and clams, linguica flamed in brandy, which I will have to try later. Our two dinners and a bottle of wine came to $40, and we walked away stuffed, buzzed, and very content. A very good meal.
