Hello from Vancouver BC
this question came up over the recent holidays during our family dinners
During a family trip to SF area in the early 1970's, I remember going to an amazing supermarket (it seemed amazing for sure to me in Grade 5 at the time) located in vicinity of Sir Frances Drake Blvd and Hwy 101 in San Rafael CA
It seems to me it was southwest of that intersection
it was a relatively large market - bigger than a current Trader Joe's for sure. It was very similar to a Safeway of the same era.
It had live lobsters in tanks, huge meaty steaks, amazingly bountiful produce displays -- and WINE -- right in the supermarket (being from Canada, that was unheard of)
certainly, we had the famous (and still missed) "Woodwards Food Floors" in Vancouver here - where beef came from their own ranch etc - but this Italian-sounding supermarket in San Rafael certainly made an impression on my then-young food tastes.
i hope someone can tell us the name -- yes, I do lie awake thinking about these kind of nostalgia / trivia questions!
