Last night of RW and we made it to Chestnut. We've gone there several times before, spanning the old and the new(er) chef and have always liked it more than any other place on Smith St (Saul and Grocery included). Made a reservation for 7pm and, when we arrived, only 1 table was filled inside. There's a 10 table outdoors (in back) so we ate there, where 3 tables were already occupied.
The food was excellent. They have a $25 Tues/Wed special that gives 3 courses from the menu without exception other than the steak ($30 instead). However, for RW there were smiley faces next to 3 soup/salad choices and around 6 entrees, signifying the $19.55 specials. We each had mixed greens (nothing special there) to start, since they were out of the beet salad and soup isnt a real option when its 82 degrees.
Entrees were very good. I had a large pork chop with pozole and okra slices. The chop was good stuff, but the pozole/okra sealed the deal for me. A great idea, executed very well. My wife had halibut on gingered bok choy and it was every bit as good.
Desserts were also really good (my chocolate goo and her berry tart w/strawberry ice cream). Our wine was a sweetish Italian/German border white for $28. Best meal of RW for us (and we did 7 of 10 nights).
The garden is incredibly serene, a perfect place to dine. We thought the place was having a nice calm Wed night until we stepped out into the front room to leave. Packed. Every table with 3 deep at the bar and more standing outside. Hope everyone got in.
