There's a little stand in front of Saul's and a big pot of oil where some delicious lattkes are being fried to order. Also, great jelly donuts (sufganiyot). Nice little three-piece group playing Jewish music. It is very festive and a such a nice sunny day.
The donuts are wonderfully thick, soft and pillowy, dusted with powdered sugar that has a little lemon flavor to it and filled with a delicious fresh-tasting strawberry jelly. $1.75 and worth every penny.
I don't remember being particularily thrilled with Saul's lattkes, but these large golden crispy lattes, hot from the oil are great. $2.25 for a plain. $2.75 with applesauce and sour cream.
The people at Saul's say they sell the donuts and lattke the two weekends preceeding Chanukah every year. A little guilt here ... nobody saw this last week and reported it?
What a swell religion to have a holiday celebrating food fried in oil. God must love jelly donuts. I should consider converting ... could be a sign from above ... the reason I was in the area was for Masse's great mini buche de Noel ... none till next week ... so I was led to the lattke instead.
