Two To Avoid in London

Simon Majumdar | Dec 1, 2000 03:35 AM

I have eaten out twice in the past two evenings and wanted to warn London based or bound Chowhounders about the two places.

1) Al Duca - in Picadilly. part of the usually reliable Zafferano group but a grave disappointment.
Food seemed to have had butter added at every stage and then added butter at the end for extree butteryness. A poor starter of soft polenta and a poached egg with shavings of black truffle followed by an anaemic rib eye. I think after the meat at Smiths of Smithfield, I will never have steak again anywhere else. My date ( actually great fun ) had a truly appalling piece of fish. The piece of Cod that passeth all understanding as the good book says. bill for two course and wine for two an eye watering £110.

2) Le 3 Garcons Shorditch - I should have known a French bistro run by a swede, an Indian and a Frenchman. All ex brokers. unfortunately the swede was in the kitchen, the Frenchman was the accountant and the Indian was doing front of house. I give it three months. Service was memorable only in its ineptitude with a 30 minute wait to see a menu. The food was unmemorable and hugely expensive ( six snails £9 anyone? ) It was not a good sign when at the end of a long three hour dinner ( not long through our choice ) the owners sat to eat their food and all the waiters swarmed around them and literally ignore everyone in the place. I truly hated this place. The motto is stockbrokers make too much money and should never be able to open vanity dining places.
