Alebrijes Mexican Bistro - Lodi

we were in Lodi for the Sandhill Crane Festival last weekend - looked forward to trying Alebrijes Mexican Bistro after reading some good reports. It's in a little strip mall at W. Lockeford St. & Ham but I overheard one of the employees mention that they are moving in December to a spot near the Post Office. Of course, that scheduled move may or may not happen on time. Call them to confirm their whereabouts - 209. 368-1831 It's a very charming little place with warm colors and bright decorations. Warm thin chips and a charred tomato salsa were brought to the table ..... salsa looked a bit more interesting than it tasted .... wasn't bad but didn't have too much zing. But I did use it to doctor up the beans and rice that came with my Tour Alebrijes plate. ( chef sampler) . The chicken / tortilla soup was ordered - I didn't try it but SO enjoyed it: besides tortillas, I think it had chicken, avacado and some pasilla chilis. ($7.99) The pescado veracruzano was a beautiful plate ..... and the dish was very well seasoned ..... tomatoes, olives and capers. Many versions of this dish are non descript but this one had a good mix of flavors and tasted fresh. Large portion also.($11.99) I had the Tour Alebrijes - it had a pyramid of rice, black beans, a smoked shrimp cake, beef filet with carmelized onions and lamb with tamarind sauce. ( $17) It was a tasty trio - the shrimp cake had an apple jam/ drizzle along with fresh corn and pasilla peppers adorning it. Chunks of smoky shrimp were bound by breadcrumbs? The tender filet had carmelized onions and was a bit sweet/sour ....... was cooked just as requested .... not a lot of seasoning on the meat though. Big thick piece of beef is hard to season - so I used some of the salsa. The lamb with tamarind was also very tender - enjoyed the tamarind sauce. nice looking plate - they were out of desserts. The waiter said the chef makes a flan/cake that is quite good ...... the service was quite friendly. Look forward to trying some more of the menu next time I'm in the area.
