Reds Produce (Columbia St)

Anyone been to this tiny tapas place on Columbia Street? I think it's new, but I haven't been down that way in a few months, so I could be wrong.

My husband and I went for a post-dinner stroll this evening and stumbled across this place on Columbia and (I think) Summit St in Carroll Gardens West / Columbia St Waterfront District / Red Hook (or whatever you want to call it).

It's tiny, and the menu looks like a *very* authentic Spanish tapas joint: boquerones, tortilla española, patatas bravas, etc. all at very cheap prices.

We'll probably go sometime in the next week and report back, but would love to hear if anyone else has been.

  1. Finally stopped by this place and sampled a few of the tapas.

The serrano ham was probably the highlight -- it had that fabulous acorn-y Spanish flavor and just melted on the tongue. I also enjoyed the *pan con tomate*, or bread rubbed with tomato and garlic. I'd say the simplest dishes were the biggest successes.

Neither one of us liked the white asparagus dish, which clearly came from a jar. It tasted limp and the texture was just too soft and bland.

They're currently BYOB and do not have a liquor license, although they are working on getting one. I do hope they get one soon because a tapas bar without a liquor license just doesn't make much sense.

Overall I'd say it's a nice neighborhood place with friendly owners and ok food at cheap prices. Not spectacular, but a pleasant enough place to have a meal and conversation. We'll be back on hot summer days when we don't feel like cooking and just want a nice snack and place to relax.

Stopped in for dinner here on Friday night.

I think it's a good place to have in the neighborhood. As noted above, it won't blow you away, but the food is tasty, interesting and the price is right. They have a nice space and the staff is friendly. The do have beer and wine now.

We had boquerones, beets with cabrales, tortilla, garlic shrimp, and olives along with a bottle of wine. Everything was simple and good and nothing was more than $6 (except the wine). T

As a general point, I think that the use of (even reliance on) canned items is not unusual in Spain. And given the current trend toward organic, local etc, I think that introducing people to quality canned items is an interesting and refreshing change of pace.

      Definitely worth a shot.

    2. While I was bummed to find Eton closed last night, I'm thrilled that it gave me a chance to check out Red's on Columbia. While I love having a pitcher of sangria and an order of sardines at La Mancha, their tapas prices and portion sizes makes it hard to sample a lot of items.

Both prices and portions are more modest at Red's which allowed us try the morcilla, beet with cabrales, tortilla, shrimp, and boquerones. We enjoyed all that we ordered, however it sounds like we missed out by not ordering the serrano.

As a heads up for beer snobs, they have a Belgian beer, Palm on tap. I didn't know it, but it was highly recc'd by the lady in charge and I'm really glad I had one.

Everything was tasty and affordable, the hostess was extremely nice, and the atmosphere was pretty pleasant.

      1. My husband and I stumbled upon Red's last night while strolling through chilly Red Hook. We decided on the spot to give it a try.

The decor was contemporary, clean and nicely done.
We sampled many of the cheeses, meats and other tapas and were delighted with every one of them. We shared a bottle of Cava which was $38 and the dishes weren't priced above 6$. I wasn't sure about the huge LCD monitor which looped animal videos on the back wall, but after being there, it added to the charm of the establishment. My favorite dishes were the toast with tomato and garlic, garlic shrimp and serrano ham.
The flan was really excellent as well.
The owners were delightful and I could see they take pride in helping you enjoy your meal to the fullest. i know we will be dining there again.
