Another Stellar Chichen Itza Meal: Valentines' tasting

Just to shine a little cheer to balance what seems to even me to be a certain cynical delight in the collecting of Valentine's Day resto horror stories:

In response to their e-mail of last week, yesterday AM, we picked up "Open table" 6:00 pm reserves at CI for last night. (I'd been fighting the flu and held off last week)

No "Valentines surcharge"; no "automatic gratuity".

We were seated immediately upon arrival. We both had the tasting menu, (which they're now offering on some weekends; call or check their website). They graciously substituted an item in place of the pork dish, for a pair of non-pork-consumers.

The familiar dishes were up to the chef's usual very high standard; the new tasting menu dishes (scallops with smoked blonde chile pepper sauce, chicken with chipotle cream) were subtle and nicely presented; I'm hoping they make their way onto the regular menu soon. Service was attentive.

Alas, I do not yet own a "foodie-cam", so I can't offer pics.

Dinner for two, including two glasses of champagne for Chow-Spouse and a big sangria for yours truly, came to about $105, not including the tip.

BTW, they've just picked up a VERY high Zagat debut number....

So why isn't this place that full EVERY Thursday night?

  1. we ate there two weeks ago before going to the local equity waiver theatre. It was outstanding. Partner had the pork pibil, I had the grilled and marinated pork. The appetizers--the assorted and the seviche--were fine.
We drank 6 or 7 dollar glasses of fine house wine.
    Yummy.

    1. Why isn't this place full? We are talking the same location?
I'm guessing it's a mismatch with its 'hood or lack of advertising (?). Hopefully it will attract more of the new downtown demographic as time goes on.

      1. re: DiveFan

it aint the food or the service. it is the rep of the hood and too many people who dont feel comfortable if it aint in a nice sweet part of town.

      2. Well, you don't have a foodie-cam, but you have a Cam the foodie, so that's just as good. We were there Tuesday night and unfortunately there were only two or three other tables occupied the whole evening. We saw the Valentine's Menu and thought it looked good, so I'm glad you liked it.
One of our group commented that she drove by several times before noticing it, so better signage might help too.
I loved the shrimp ceviche and the flan was the best in recent memory. Coconut and guanabana sorbets were also good.

        1. Much more crowded during the lunch hour.

Also the awkward parking situation makes it less attractive in general for a restaurant.

          1. Where is it? This place is new to me, I would love to try it. Do they have a website?

            1. re: Tom P

Uh, that's what the Place link is for (look to the right of the OP).

Click on it to see more details including a link to the establishments web site, a Google map and any other CH topic references (many!).

Yikes! Scanning too fast. Thanks for pointing it out.
