Saturday brunch at Absinthe, SF
A friend and I decided to check out Absinthe's brunch yesterday. The restaurant was surprisingly empty, and I'm not sure why- our food was really delicious. We split the warm biscuits with buttermilk-sausage gravy, sage, and fried eggs ($11), the scrambled eggs, Cypress Grove goat cheese, heirloom tomato confit, and basil ($12.50) and an orange currant scone. The scone was fresh, buttery, and delicious- just the right texture. The biscuits were equally buttery and topped with a great (and not too heavy) sausage gravy with 2 perfectly fried eggs (over-easy). I wish there had been a touch more sage- it was more of a garnish. The scramble was infused with tomato-ey goodness- really delicious goat cheese, although it was a bit too much for my taste. I'd highly recommend Absinthe for a mid-range brunch (total was $56 including tip for those three dishes, two coffees, and two very delicious fresh squeezed orange juices.) There was no wait at all— surprisingly, since every other place we walked by on Hayes was packed.

what time was this? I've walked by a few times and they're always pretty busy on a Sunday.

That's probably why. I notice most city brunches don't get out until 12:30-1 p.m.

Thats good to know. I am a huge biscuits & gravy fan, and I recently enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Absinthe, so I'll have to check out brunch for sure.
I went to Stack's down the street about a month ago. That place was packed to the brim, but the food was IMHO mediocre. Weird how that works.

The wait for a table on Sunday at 11:30 was an hour plus! I'm glad you had an easier time getting seated.
