Roy Blount Jr. Is a Food Writing God
I'd simply like to get the word around that if you haven't read Roy Blount Jr.'s food writing, you owe it to yourself to do so. I just picked up his "Long Time Leaving: Dispatches from Up South" at the library, and his essay "The Way Folks Were Meant to Eat" is one of the damndest, most hilarious food pieces ever. You not only end up wanting to eat off his plate--you end up wanting to live his life. For those in need of a break from writers whose vocab contains a lot of words like "gastrique" and "deconstruct," Roy's your man.

Definitely a no-regrets purchase - he's also got some great observations with regard to music and his piece on Memphis Minnie has an incredibly evocative description of fresh biscuits, of all things.
