Palo Alto lovely patio, good ham subs & grilled sausages not just a Polish Deli
If you like a good sub, you will like Polish Deli with it's high quality Chicago cold cuts and sausages. You don't need to be Eastern Eurpean to like it.
The sandwiches are on crusty French rolls from Palo Alto Baking company and are some of the best subs in the area.
Polish Deli is one street over from California on Cambridge. This bright, clean shop has a nice patio in back where the owner, Martin, grills the sausages.
The ham sandwiches are excellent and served on French rolls or organic rye bread. The following cold cuts are available: baked ham, black forest ham, Polish ham, smoked turkey, cured chicken roll and Baleron smoked butt sausage (a ham-like cold cut. Very good).
Sandwiches come with mayonnaise or butter, Polish mustard, tomatoes, Polish pickles, and lettuce. Martin is a stickler for quality. So the tomato tasted like a tomato. He also only orders enough cold cuts so that they are fresh and not sitting around for long periods of time.
The good part of that is the meat is excellent. The bad part is that sometimes he sells out. I went on Saturday, craving the excellent Polish ham and the only cold cut left was the smoked turkey. That turned out to be better than the average smoked turkey. I havent tried the rye bread yet either since it is also sold out by time I get there.
Grilled Polish sausages are about a foot long and served on the French rolls with mustard and sauerkraut, if you like. Polish sausage selection includes: regular Polish sausage, Slaska Polish sausage, country Polish Sausage, Hunter Polish sausage and Kisha. The regular Polish sausage is good but I like the country Polish sausage better. It is smokier and has a courser grind. Havent tried the other three types yet.
Martin sells the best quality Polish sausage in the Bay Area. The brand he serves was better than a kielbasa that I tried that was imported from Poland. Im not sure who makes the rye, but Martin says it is organic. I thought it was going to be from Esthers German Bakery, but I didnt get a clear answer on that on my last visit.
This is really a worthy little business and if I lived closer Id be there all the time.

Thanks for the post! I didn't get around to trying it after the earlier ones, but I did today and the country sausage was indeed very tasty. It came with some of the best mustard I've had; I got a jar of it (Sarepska brand) for home.

Glad you liked it. He gets in some interesting sausages from time to time. Once there was one with juniper in it.
I bought a jar of the mustard too. I don't remember the name on the jar, but it has white and black wild mustard from Poland.
He also keeps telling me about this great pate he has, but it always is sold out by time I get there. So whenever you stop by, it's worth asking about.
