The L. A. Burger Hunt Map

As I attempt to burger my way through L.A., I armed myself with a handy map so I am never far from Medium rare Beef Patties and Melted Sharp Cheddar. Or Blue. Or Swiss. And I love Grilled Onions. Sigh...

There were a few mentioned that I couldn't find, so post the info and I'll gladly add them, as well as any other's. I didn't put any chains other than my nearest In n' Out, you know where they are.

I included an occasional remark from the original thread:

http://www.chowhound.com/topics/338345

Not sure if that's okay, lemme know and I'll gladly remove the remarks.

Enjoy!

  1. That's great, really great.

So great, I don't want to suggest any additions because it makes it seem like I'm making corrections.

But at risk of being forward, might I suggest:

    LOS ANGELES
    2575 W. Beverly Blvd.

    and

    George Petrelli's
    5615 Sepulveda Blvd
    Culver City, CA 90230

    and, finally

    The Shack
    185 Culver Boulevard
    Playa Del Rey, CA 90293

    Again, very cool ...

    1. re: PaulF

Has anyone tried the lunch burger at Boa? It intrigues me.

25 Degrees--I've only been once because it's not that convenient--has the best burger that I've eaten.
One step down but extremely enjoyable nonetheless--a bacon cheeseburger at Library Alehouse in Santa Monica.
Also in this group is the Amuse burger at Beechwood.

      1. re: Wolfgang

Thanks! This is great - I'll bookmark it as a reference when I want to find a new burger place. My favorite off the list is Bowry's burger, but also only recently started eating burgers again, so I have quite a few more to try :-)

Great Burgers on homemade buns, they just brought back their cheese bun. Angus beef or Kobe. I love the Ole or the Anaheim, sometimes just a cheeseburger extra onion.

Do not know the best way to describe this, it is a burger patty grilled on a small grill maybe 6 at a time, bathed with this yellow mustard garlic cabbage mess. Grab a beer and relax.

Yakanakis on Valley Blvd. 3 or 4 blocks east of the 605 Frwy.
Just a great burger stand burger, I usually get the double with extra onions and french fries well done.

Last but not least my latest obsession, a Burger Taco, you heard right. a hamburger in a taco shell.

Tried 4 places and the BOMB is the original!

      1. re: Burger Boy

Burger Boy knows. Thats fer sure. However, I have turn him onto the local Taco Bell that still makes Bell Beefers in El Monte. Therefore, I know something about meat in a bun myself.

These are my two current favs. At Egg Heaven in Long Beach you can get your burger at breakfast or lunch. This is a nice little corner café with a 60's hippie–like feel and great food. The burger is juicy inside and has a nice crust outside – a two hand burger. I have ate three of these in the last three weeks and each time I notice nice chunks of burger fall unto my plate which I eat with my fingers. I love this burger and this counter.

Take a friend to Park Ave. for a nice night out to enjoy the best drink, burger, desert in a cool 60's Doogie style dinning room. The burger is a classic chopped sirloin that is everything it should be when served but you would not believe how good it is the next day as well when eaten cold (ya, we ordered way too much food last visit). The prices are very reasonable at Park Ave. Checkout the link. I really feel this are two that should not be missed. In fact we were going to go back to Park Ave, last weekend but all the talk about Milk on Beverly side-tracked us for desert there, therefore, we are headed to Park Ave. this weekend for those steaks and chopped sirloin burgers and oooooh that fruit cruble desert -- beats Milk hands down.

At Park Ave. Maybe the best chopped sirloin burger anypalce.

        1. re: JeetJet

Been going to that Taco Bell for a year. There was a post a year or 2 ago that listed 3 or 4 Taco Bells still serving the BellBeffer, I can not find it.

          1. re: Burger Boy

Was this one of the posts you were thinking of ? http://www.chowhound.com/topics/74211...

            1. re: tony michaels

No, i think i looked very closely, thats is not it, it listed 4 Taco Bells LA/OC that still did the BellBeefer and the Encharito.

Ah, looks like I just repeated myself. One of the 3 signs of the "overly" aged process. ;-D

          2. re: JeetJet

            i will check those out!

        2. The first one I clicked on has been bulldozed for over a month: Clearman's Galley. Of all that complex, only the North Woods Inn still stands. Sob.

          1. re: Will Owen

Just had one last week. They make The Boats menu inside the North Woods until the Boat is rebuilt. Still great

            http://www.clearmansrestaurants.com/n...

            1. re: JeetJet

Oh, I am so glad to know that. Thanks!

              1. re: Will Owen

You are welcome. Sorry for the short post but I was going out the door to...eat. Now I am back. The Boat was a landmark. However, it is nice having that chili-cheese burger inside the Northwoods. That large tall mug of ice cold beer goes perfect with that burger. This is one of those burgers that each part (bun, meat, chili) by itself is really nothing special but something happens when it all comes together -- a classic good burger. Northwoods serves the Boat menu until 4:00 pm Mon. thru Fri, I think. Call to be sure. When you visit check-out the art in the entry. They have a cool picture of what the Boat will look like once it is rebuilt. Same old Boat but the wharf style buildingds they will build as the dinning rooms will be nice. I think it will be a Hot Spot Sports bar in SGV.

          2. What a map! It must've taken a long time to make it. I made a Google Map for cheap eats in Pasadena (with far fewer locations), and then I had to stop. It took too long. :)

            1. awesome. don't forget MORTONs killer burger.

              1. re: revets2

Do you mean Morton's on Melrose or the Morton's Steakhouse chain?

              2. Thanks for all the feedback! I will update as I can to keep it current. Glad y'all like it, sure beats doing what I get PAID to do. Now if I can only get work to subsidize a burrito map...

This is a great map! Thanks for the effort!

                2. Original two-lane jewels of In-n-Out. Among the first five built and still hand you a hot burger as you drive-thru unlike the newer one-lane crap the chain is building.

The "Hawkins" burger consist of three, one-pound ground beef patties. Each pattie has different toppings. Pattie one has 2 Italian sausages with hot chili sauce and cheese. Pattie two has 2 eggs over easy with chili sauce. Pattie three has 1/2 pound of the best pastrami in town with chili sauce. This all comes on a giant bun with divider pieces of bread in between the patties.

                      1. re: Burger Boy

Can anyone VERIFY this location. I googled the above address and it's smack in a residential area. But another post has it near Imperial Blvd. and Compton Ave. around 500 ft. away (according to Google maps).

                      2. I LOVE YOU! :)

                        I highly recommend adding:

Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers (TONS of different burgers and toppings, inexpensive)
11660 San Vicente Blvd (Brentwood) 90049

                        9641 Sunset Blvd, 90210

                        1. The burger at Morel's Bistro at the Grove (Third & Fairfax) is outstanding. They have a steakhouse upstairs and as a result the downstairs bistro serves a burger that is prime grade beef and absolutley delicious with or without toppings. (It comes with onion marmalade relish and Edam or Grueyre cheese, but you can have them hold it or just scrape it off.) Good roll too. The other food is hit or miss (fries can be good) and so I think this place gets kind of ignored, but the burger is a very pleasant surprise, and one of the best in the city IMHO.

                          1. great map! i emailed it to my treo. I would add Pinks, which i feel is highly underrated in the burger dept. I like to get a pastrami chili cheeseburger. It ranks right up there with the pastrami chili cheese burrito dog or the bacon chili cheese burrito dog.

                            1. re: SeanT

Thanks for the Pink's reminder, Sean! Not a big hot dog person, so every time I take the visiting tourists there, I wind up getting a burger. Chili Cheeseburger with a fried egg, hawaiian style, yum! Obviously I don't go too often...

                            2. Nice work!

                                1. Is this a beef burger map only, or do you want to include pork as well? If so, my vote is:

What a thoughtful (& very useful) thing to do! You Rock!

                                  2. thats so awesome. i'd like to get a burger right about now, but i think i'mma try the 1/2lb burger at dodgers game tonight. ...sounds better then a dodger dog...

if anyone is wondering where to get it, on the loge level home side, the stand at the end next to the entrance, they have a grill. items on the grill include 1/2lb burger, bbq chicken sandwich, steak sandwich, 1/2lb andouille sausage. they all come with kettle chips.

                                    1. Great map. I notice that OC needs some help.

TK Burger (The Kind Burger) on PCH in Huntington Beach is as California as a burger gets. The ambiance of sunshine, beach, PCH, and this little shack could not b e better. It is the first place that comes to my mind to take someone from out-of-state because of the life-long memory they will have of that ambiance and that great burger – California at it’s best! The burger meat is above average but the bun (bread is the foundation of all sandwiches) is simply the best in So Cal. I wish all burgers had these buns, this view, and the cool people who serve it.

There is a great Dairy Queen next door for desert. Try the cones dipped or with sprinkles, or try the frozen banana. Finish it all with a drive along the beach – Welcome to California!

                                      1. Here's a good one on the east side:

                                        Art's
                                        the art of Burgers

It's like In N' Out married Tommy's... weird I know, but oh sooo good. Very good crispy onion rings and shoe string fries. Wednesday and Sundays are .99 cent burger days.

                                        1. I don't eat burgers often, but the burger that I had at Tom's in Lancaster was very, very good. So were the fries and shake.

                                          Tom's
                                          1805 W Avenue J
                                          Lancaster, CA 93534

Lancaster is near Palmdale and part of the greater LA area. Just one more suggestion for the burger map. :)

                                          1. Anyone ever have a Big Wave with Cheese at Islands? I know it's a chain, but the fries are good enough to make it post worthy and the burgers aren't legendary but quite good. http://www.islandsrestaurants.com/

                                            1. Best burgers i've had this year is at 25 Degrees, followed by The Hungry Cat and Father's Office.

The burger at 25 Degrees is on another level from anythign i've ever had, cooked to order, so juicy, but the fries and onion rings suck.

Father's office has more texture, but the carmelized onions overwhelms some of the other flavors, but they have awesome sweet potato fries. I'd go just for the fries.

Hungr Cat's Pug Burger is similar to the Father's Office burger but without the onions.

The recent ad for Carl's Jr's teriyaki burger had me thinkin' about the Hawaiian Burger at Island's. Pineapple, teriyaki sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion, melted swiss...Used to drive to the nearest one half an hour away for that burger and their huge basket of fries. Not usually fond of seasoning salt on fries, but for islands it works.

THe Carls burger i'm sure will be a letdown. I love the Hawaiian burger at islands.

                                              2. Outlaws in PDR make big, juicy, rare burgers that are actually worth the drive. The bleu cheese Jack the Ripper is the best $10 you'll spend. A longtime Grub favorite that hasn't changed a whit in decades. Cold beer & artery-clogging burgers, yowzer.

                                                1. I like the burger at bloom quite a bit. its on pico don't remember the exact address buts its easy of La Cienega.

                                                  1. I'd definitely add Golden Burger in Van Nuys. Very good review on this board.

Oh and thanks for doing this. Great work!

If Malissa hadn't posted below, I wouldn't have looked at this thread again. I noticed that what I wrote above doesn't make any sense!! I did not mean Golden Burger. Sorry about that. I meant the place that is at the southeast corner of Van Nuys Blvd and Magnolia. It is called Billy's Grill.

                                                    2. Best burger in LA is at Manhattan Beach Brewery. Not on your map.

                                                      1. I LOVE burgers and I disagree with Pie N burger, because the patty is not thick enough for medium or medium rare! it's rather dry in fact, though the burger as a whole is rather tasty. My husband, another burger fan, says why go there when In N Out is cheaper and comparable. personally I don't like In N out, but have only tried the one on Huntington and Garfield in Alhambra.
Really underrated is Hamburger Hamlet, just 'cause it's a chain! We go there weekly (on Lake Ave in Pasadena) for the awesome hamburgers. They don't always end up grilling it medium if you ask for medium (it's heavenly when they do though) but it's still really yummy!

                                                        1. What a terrific map! Thank you.

One of the best burgers in LA is served at Tom Bergin's, the big Irish bar on Fairfax just north of Olympic that's been around forever. It's just a high quality, great char-grilled cheeseburger. Nothing fancy, just done right.

                                                          1. Richmond Bar & Grill
145 Richmond St, El Segundo, CA

I'm a big fan of their Western Burger. It's not the best burger in LA, I'm sure, but pair it up with Richmond's famous homemade potato chips and cup of chili and it can't hardly be beat.

                                                            1. Second the votes for 26 Beach Restaurant in Venice and Rustic Canyon Wine Bar "Cast Iron" Burger in Santa Monica (great desserts too!)

3 Square Bakery Cafe in Venice has a great pretzel burger

Cannot go wrong with the burger at Magnolia or Bowery in Hollywood

                                                              1. Nice effort, though I think any compendium of L.A.'s burger joints must include Original Tommy's on Beverly and Rampart (2575 W. Beverly Blvd., (213) 389-9060, http://www.originaltommys.com/). Since 1946, Tommy's has made L.A.'s signature burger, the chili cheese burger. Plus, if you dare, the chili tamales are great. Every location is quality, but the orignal on Beverly is something special. Just a little stand with a big parking lot. It is no wonder half of the burger stands i this town are named some version of "Tommy." They all pay homage to the original.

                                                                1. Phenomenal map. Now if someone would do the same thing for taco spots in Orange County..........:-)

                                                                  1. re: Nakdcpl

Not only "taco spots in Orange County" but many other categories. It would be very useful to those of us who drive all over the city -- or country -- if chowhound.com offered customizable google-quality maps of 'hound favorites, with cryptic text entries and, perhaps, pointers to lengthier discussions.

                                                                  2. Don't forget Hinano's in Venice, right by the pier. (If you don't mind a bar brawl with your burger.) I might even say it's my #1. Order it as is, and I love, love, love, the peppers and pickle that come with it.

                                                                    Hinano's
                                                                    15 Washington Blvd.
                                                                    Venice, CA 90292

                                                                    1. It seems to me that the new incarnation of Mo Betta Meatty Meat Burger is definitely worth including.

Is there any way for us to update this map?

                                                                      Mr Taster

                                                                      1. OK, seriously, have you had the cheeseburger at Comme Ca? It's incredible! Even Jonathan Gold thinks it's the best ever.

                                                                        http://www
