  1. One of my favorites is Roots and Grubs, written by a friend who is a food critic/stay-at-home-dad in Seattle.

    http://www.rootsandgrubs.com/

    1. http://breadbasketcase.blogspot.com -- Marie Wolf, a lawyer from Minneapolis, is baking every bread in Rose Levy Beranbaum's The Bread Bible. This woman has a terrific writing style and a great sense of humor.

      1. re: Nancy Berry

Nancy, thanks for recommending the breadbasketcase blog. It's an engrossing read. Well written. Good photos.

        1. re: val ann c

nancy, that is a nice blog. i laughed at the photo of rose levy berenbaum's cousins sitting on each end of the sofa, not entirely gleeful in aspect.
          ;-)

          1. re: val ann c

mattbites.com is great food, humor and, of course, photography. check this photog site by the same matt: http://www.mattphotographs.com/

        2. There's a website run by a lady on a travel board I visit (mostly re Italy) - she calls her blog Food Porn - it's mainly just pictures of food - here's the flickr version

          http://www.flickr.com/photos/42198533@N00/

          and here's the Italian version

          http://realityfood.iobloggo.com/

I can spend hours looking at the pix

          1. re: ElizabethS

Those are great pictures, I just wish I could read Italian.

            1. re: rcheng

You can plug the URL into Babel Fish and it will translate into English, roughly. I love Babel Fish because it always reminds me of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" radio and TV shows, as my cell phone always reminds me of Star Trek.

              1. re: rcheng

rcheng, by the time you read the captions for all of the dishes, you'd know the italian language for food, backward and forward!

the site inspires me to eat all different kinds of italian --- branch out! thanks for the site.

            2. Elmo Monster's Monster Munching blog:

                                2. Don't forget Asian blogs. Here are two that make me green with envy for all the food we can't find in the US.

On Malaysia by a frequent Chowhound poster:
                                  http://eatingasia.typepad.com/

                                  On the Phillippines:
                                  http://karen.mychronicles.net/

Here are 2 others I dont know as well.
                                  Thailand
                                  http://realthai.blogspot.com/

                                  Vietnam
                                  http://noodlepie.typepad.com/blog/

                                  1. Great pictures from restaurants in LA (but not much written content):
                                    http://www.potatomato.com/mt/

                                    Great baking website:
                                    http://bakingsheet.blogspot.com/

Fun NY blog with delicious pictures:
                                    http://www.roboppy.net/food/

                                    1. I cannot look at a blog with crappy photography, I just can't. If you're a bad photographer and a good writer, use those powers of description!

Matt Bites for design, photography, and content. LA-based. Find the post on snails and you'll see why I was hooked instantly.
                                      http://www.mattbites.com

StephenCooks.com: recipes, recipes, recipes, and great execution of design, content, and photography. Based in Maine, and the gratuitous references to lobster and other fresh East Coast seafood makes me dizzy with jealousy:
                                      http://www.stephencooks.com

The Ethicurean is my favorite group blog. Their "Glossary of Terms" is very good reading:
                                      http://www.ethicurean.com/

So many good ones are out there. I vascillate between wanting sheer porn and really wanting to know who is connected to their food. Fancy restaurant blogs don't really do it for me: any rich person with gadgetry and the means can show up and take pictures (bad or good) of their meal. I like knowing what people do with good ingredients, themselves. Please do not take this to mean that I myself don't like to go to fancy restaurants. It's just that a blog comprised of nothing but that is nothing I would subscribe to.

                                      1. I love http://www.piedayfriday.com Frankly, I'm a pie-aholic, and it's very funny and has great stories and, more importantly, RECIPES for delicious pies.

                                        1. At the moment, I've been reading NewsYouCanEat, primarily because of the comments. The substance isn't bad either . . . if you like Starbucks, ice cream and soda!

                                          1. http://creampuffsinvenice.typepad.com...

I love this site! She's from Canada. She has the best photography. If the pictures stink I won't bother to read the blog. Her pictures make you feel like you can reach out and touch the food. Scroll down to the Rustic Tart and What A Peach on the first page for example. Don't forgt the archives. Makes me want to start a blog if I had the patience.

                                            1. www.sautewednesday.com Good writing and links to everything foodie.

                                              1. re: lotech

FYI, an update. Bruce Cole is no longer working on SauteWednesday.com, as he is now the editor for Edible San Francisco. His blog, still wonderful, can be found here:

                                                http://www.ediblenation.com/

                                              2. Thanks for all these blogs. Looks like I will never have to read a book again...

                                                http://augieland.blogs.com/augie_land/
He loves the "molecular gastronomy" stuff (El Bulli, Alinea, etc) and documents meals really well, so I can live vicariously. Great for helping me decide where my next $300 meal will be. Lots of typos.

Nicely written by a friend-of-a-friend who is a pastry chef.

                                                1. One that I enjoy is http://kitchen-notebook.blogspot.com/
-beautiful photos and oh how I'd love that life in France...

                                                  1. I stumbled on this one while on the Chicago board- his photos of the 24 course "tour" at Alinea are something beyond food porn....

                                                    http://www.skilletdoux.com

Chicago based but travels a fair amount.

                                                    1. I really enjoy and live vicariously through:

                                                      1. I love Looka!

                                                        http://www.gumbopages.com/looka/

Chuck Taggart is from New Orleans and a lot of his posts deal with the city and it's people, food, and culture. He also just wants real iced tea, which is something to which I can relate:
                                                        http://www.gumbopages.com/food/tea-rant.html

He has an entire section of his web site devoted to authentic creole and cajun recipes. His red beans and rice recipe is one I use on a regular basis to rave reviews:

                                                        http://www.gumbopages.com/recipe-page...

                                                        1. I just found obsessionwithfood.com

                                                          1. Oh my gosh there are so many good ones! Cream Puffs in Venice, Orangette, Chocolate and Zucchini, Nordljus and Chez Pim are among the best and most famous. There are also specialty blogs like Meathenge (guess what it's about?), Chockylit (cupcakes), Eggbeater (pastry chef musings), The Wednesday Chef (cooks out of the LA times and NYTimes food sections each week) Farmgirl Fare (great stories)etc. There are great pictures and good writing on all of these. I have culled a list of my favorites on my blog, and of course I like to think mine's not half bad - though it mostly pertains to San Diego and is not nearly as slick as most of these. You can really lose yourself for hours! Here's a link to mine, which will lead you down the rabbit hole...

                                                            1. Here are some more I'm into at the moment:

For those with a methodical approach to cooking:

                                                              1. I really like Gutenberg's Daily Feed:

                                                                www.bunrab.com/

especially because Gutenberg visits a lot of places in Marin where I live. The photos always make my mouth water! There are actually three blogs on the site, but Daily Feed seems to be updated the most frequently.

                                                                1. I really like Midtown Lunch. It's a great review of inexpensive lunchtime restaurants, with photos and commentary. I don't live in New York, but I'm constantly adding to my list of places to try when I visit, and I really like having access to a list of great but not expensive lunch places; it gives me the "inside track."

                                                                  http://midtownlunch.wordpress.com/

I also enjoy Sara Moulton's blog http://www.saramoulton.com/ even though it is a bit irregular in frequency of postings in the blog. (Her Website does have a "kitchen shrink" section where she'll answer variou culinary questions---updated more regularly.)

                                                                        1. Can't believe nobody has mentioned NYCnosh http://www.nycnosh.com so far!

It's gorgeous, the pics are fab, and the writing is wonderful. Best local blog by a very long distance.

                                                                            1. I feel inclined to offer some much due props to Robyn's The Girl Who Ate Everything food blog:

                                                                              http://www.roboppy.net/food/

She represents us young NYCers quite well :-)

                                                                              1. One of my favourites, which I stumbled upon purely by chance, is the Greek Food Recipes and Reflections blog by the Greek Gourmand, Sam Sotiropoulos, see: http://greekgourmand.blogspot.com/

The pics are excellent, the background info on each recipe is always interesting, the recipes themselves are straightforward, and the food is tasty! What more needs be said? A++ Check it out!
