Does anyone remember real frozen yogurt?

Remember when frozen yogurt tasted like...yogurt?

Now, frozen yogurt is a dieter's pretend ice-cream; really it's just ice-milk with some non-active yogurt cultures thrown in. I have particularly fond memories of vanilla "Danny-on-a-stick" frozen yogurt pops made by Dannon. Every once-in-a-while I'll peruse the frozen foods case at the supermarket, looking in vain for some actual frozen yogurt.

Does anybody know if this is made anywhere, by anyone, anymore?

  1. i loved it too! Not only do I remember Dannon on a stick, but when i was a kid in the 80's, you could by quarts of the tangy stuff. The only close thing I've found in the past ten years is yogurt gelato in Italy and France. I'm sure some Italian-style NYC gelato palces make the flavor but I don't know where to direct you...

I think Cones on Bleeker makes it, but you might want to call and confirm.

40 carrots in the basement of bloomingdale's definitely has it, they have plain frozen yogurt and chocolate I believe. The plain with honey on top is the stuff dreams are made of.

Yes! Bloomie's is the best place to get this. It is a great treat, which I think rivals the best ice creams in town.

The brand is Frogurt, and sadly it's not found in more places.

It's also served in the cafe at Bloomie's in Soho on the second floor.

      2. It's not a help at all, but I do remember real frozen yogurt, and it was delicious!

        1. Doesn't Carrots (in Bloomingdale's) carry real frozen yogurt? I've read paens to their yogurt here.

          1. The only place I've found real, tangy, frozen yogurt is at Cafe Lalo, Amsterdam at 83rd Street. The only thing I get there.

            1. Not only do I remember, but I long for that flavor.

If you're ever out in the Bay Area, call the Lark Creek Inn in Larkspur (Marin County) and ask if their yogurt sorbet is on the menu. It is one of my all-time favorite deserts.

              1. I have dreams about this stuff too - soo delicious. Do you also remember Haagen Dazs' HONEY VANILLA ice cream? *sigh*

I have heard the place in Bloomingdale's is the closest one will get to Dannon, but haven't tried it yet myself.

                1. The best real frozen yogurt is the PLAIN frozen yogurt at Bloomingdales. You can only get it at the 40 Carrots restaurant. It is soooo good.
