lardo and mostarda!
i just moved back to new york after living in italy for a year and a half, and there are two things i became addicted to there that i haven't been able to find here yet:
lardo di colonnata (i'd be happy to either buy it myself or have bruschette or a plate of salumi in a restaurant)
mostarda -- the mustardy condiment that you eat with cheese -- i've found the kind in a jar that is whole fruits (cherries, oranges, etc.) within a syrup but what i'm really looking for is the homemade kind that is more the consistency of chutney (ie. all ground up). i've seen approximations, but nothing's had the sharp taste of the excellent mostarda i've eaten in italy...
thanks in advance for any ideas....

Try to find both of these at otto. I know they have a lardo pizza and a mustardy chutney side with their cheeses... hope it helps

Are you looking for a store or a restaurant? If the latter, I know that Mario Batali loves to introduce Americans to lardo, and it's often on the menu at Babbo. It's not surprising that Otto would serve it as well. I've had some fine mostardas with cheese courses at Babbo, too.

Check out Italian Wine Merchants -- 16th Street just east of Union Square. Apart from being a great wine store, they cure all the meats for Mario Batali. Maybe they would sell you some lardo.

Do they sell the meats they produce?

I was in Liguria at the beginning of June - had prawns wrapped in lardo on pesto - fantastic.

The Italian shop in Chelsea Market has lardo for sure, and I'd bet on them for anything else Italian.

The Chelsea Market place has jars of "Salsa di Fichi" (sp?) and other varieties like pear and orange. It's the closest thing I've found. I'm not really sure what the difference is between a "salsa" and a "mostarda", if any...

if I'm not mistaken, "mostarda" often refers to a condiment made with grape must ("mosta", hence the name), such as Pidemont's classic "mostarda d'uva". One thing is for sure, is doesn't have anything to do with mustard.

Actually, I think mostarda does have to do with mustard - made w/ mustard oil:
