*URGENT* -- Mandarin buffet, Starwalk, or something else?
Hi fellow chowhoundters :) I am planning to go to a chinese buffet place tomorrow (Wednesday) evening and still trying to pick the place. The person I am going with is a white canadian guy. He came long way to Toronto and is very excited to go to chinese buffet restaurant... so.. not wanting to dissappoint him, I thought I'd post this to hear your suggestions:) The question is... which restaurant do you think most non-asian people like? And if the answer is Mandarin buffet, which location offers the best weekday dinner buffet? or do they all offer the same thing?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Mandarin offers a very North American version of chinese food - lots of sweet sauces thickened with corn starch and deep fried things. It's basically an all you can eat Manchu-Wok. If he's from a non-major city in Canada, this is probably the kind of Chinese food he's accustomed to. I've never noticed much difference between locations, really, though I don't go often enough to really say for sure.
If he's excited about Toronto chinese buffets on the basis of 'Finally trying real chinese food', Mandarin is not the place to go. If he's excited on the basis of 'Holy huge buffet full of all the things I love', Mandarin is likely perfect.

Agreed...Mandarin is the way to go. If you don't mind travelling, the Brampton head office location has a wonderful salt water aquarium for viewing.

Chinese buffets are embarrassing representations of Chinese foods.
Non-Chinese: please note that the food at Chinese buffets tend to be a mediocre version of Chinese food.
If you have to go to a Chinese buffet- then I recommend Starwalk in Scarborough (steeles and silverstar, near Kennedy) or China Buffet King .
Never go to Starwalk on Mother's Day= Lineups, big crowds.
