YVR - Day 3 and 4 reviews

In my continuing quest to keep munching my way through Vancouver, here's the latest and greatest reviews.

Finally made it here considering I often stay in the area when visiting Vancouver. Mom brought me here and we had the seafood salad, assorted dlx sashimi, triple salmon roll and an order of uni nigiri. The seafood salad is big, crisp mix of lettuces with slivers of salmon, tuna, shrimps, geoduck and giant clam topped with corn flakes and dressed with a very light citrusy dressing. A really great dish, well balanced flavor wise and the contrasts of textures was really nice. The sashimi and uni were fresh and sweet and well prepared. There was salmon, hamachi, tuna, amaebi (although not nearly as good as the spot prawn I had the previous night at Blue Water). Uni was nice but had a slight hint of bitterness at the end but was still really fresh and sweet. The triple salmon roll was the disappointment, salmon roe, smoked salmon and salmon. Unfortunately, the oil from the smoked salmon had saturated the roll making it fall apart. Flavour wise, I think the smoked salmon was pretty overwhelming. Bill was about 50ish.

The plan was to meet for a drink after work at Diamond before rolling around to dinner at Boneta. Argh...foiled again. Diamond is closed on Tuesdays (and Mondays too I think). So ended up for drinks and dinner at Boneta. Had the Anjou cocktail, really nice. It went down really all too quickly due to lack of strong alcohol flavours and I love the taste of the cinammon and pear. Amongst all of us, we had the crab salad, the duck, beef short ribs and sablefish. Everyone's favorite was the ribs served over pappardelle with red wine jus. Really nicely done, well braised and flavours worked well. Crab salad was served with serrano ham and a melon puree and some foam on top. Refreshing and would be wonderful on a hot summer day as it's so nice and light. Duck was nice, it was a seared duck breast with cherries and shitakes and some confit with quinoa. Seared perfectly but still liked the confit style better with the quinoa on top. Was lighter in style was my feeling and I really enjoyed the shredded duck meat and the salty hit from it paired with the more neutral quinoa. The sablefish was really divine, I love sablefish for that silky texture. Overall, I nice dining experience, not mind blowing but fairly well executed.

Pho Thai Hoa
The DP and I both ordered the No 4, which I call the kitchen sink pho as it has everything in it. Tendon, tripe, beef balls, sliced rare beef. Still a two thumbs up for this place.

Tung Hing Bakery
After pho, rolled on over and ordered up the house special banh mi. I was full already but had to make a pit stop as was already in the neighbourhood. The sandwich was 2.75 and man, what a great sandwich. The pate spread combined with the different cold cuts and crunchy vegetables, sublime. Bread was perfect, crunchy crumbs everywhere and tender insides and even managed to not scrape the roof off my mouth. Only thing was I could've used more tang from the pickled veggies. Overall though, really good. Also picked up a durian coconut bun which is resting in it's bag still as I can't fit anything down right now after dinner. I'll report later.

Lin Chinese Cuisine
Couldn't make it out to Burnaby with the little niece in tow so settled for a roll around the corner to Lin as usual. XLB still a thumbs up. The soup is just wonderful with a hint of something I can't put my finger on right now. Still a big 2 thumbs up and my little niece managed to gobble up 4 of the 6. Also ordered the spicy eggplant and tofu, not so spicy, was rather sweet but I love eggplant in all forms so this one was quite good for me. Rounded out the meal with steamed buns and a veggie and shredded chicken soup noodle for the little one. Nothing special there. Bill was 30 and we were packing leftovers.

That covers it for now. Next up...chowdown and then off to Whistler!
In the meantime, Happy eating!!!
