Had a terrific lunch at Oishii in Chestnut Hill today. I haven’t been there in a while and I’m so glad I was in the neighborhood and had time to stop in. I had the shitake mushroom tempura maki, spicy tuna handroll, unagi, and Joe's Kazan Maki. So yummy!
The unagi had a light crisp exterior and had a rich slightly sweet finish. Perfect! I originally ordered Jeff’s maki but saw Joe’s being served to someone else and decided to switch. For those unfamiliar with Oishii, they have a small menu of maki creations designed by loyal customers. This is one the maki rolls served with “stuff” all over the top of it. Joe’s maki is California maki topped with octopus, crabstick, roe and spicy mayo, like a seafood salad concoction. I really enjoyed the snappy chewy texture. The mayo had a bit more spicy bite than I remembered. I think these kinds of rolls are best to share because they are very rich and big and filling. Of course I devoured this and moved on to eat more…
From here I took a short breather and enjoyed an ice cold Sapporo. For “dessert” I had the shitake mushroom tempura maki which was surprisingly light. Each bite exploded with warm earthy goodness. And I polished it off with a spicy tuna handroll, which was good, but not terrific today. I hesitate to be critical because I was getting a little stuffed by then.
The weather kept the crowds away and I could sit back, take my time and enjoy a giant sushi lunch at one of my favorite places.
