Xmas at Norms

After a terrible experience one Christmas a few years ago at a severly understaffed restaurant, I swore I'd never eat out again on a holiday. Well, yesterday a couple friends called me to see if I'd like to have dinner at Norms in Van Nuys. I was feeling lazy so cooking at home did not appeal to me in the least. I've never been to Norms. The restaurant was pretty busy when we arrived just after 7:00pm but we got seated fairly quickly. I noticed that there was a lot of debris like napkins, opened sugar packets, ect. scattered about the floor. Our sever was very friendly and fast. I ordered a cheesburger with onion rings and a .99 cent bowl of chicken soup. The soup was basically a bowl of broth. There was only two small pieces of chicken, a few noodles and some celery chunks. The rest was broth. My cheesburger had to be sent back because I requested the bun not to be toasted which it was. One friend sent his steak back because it was undercooked. My other friend had the turkey dinner which was on special for $8.99 He seemed to enjoy it. My burger and onion rings just seemed bland to me.
Dinner for the three of us came to $32.
So, can I recomend Norms? Well if money is that much of an issue or it's a holiday and nowhere else is open then procede but don't expect much. Otherwise I recomend spending a few dollars more and heading to someplace like Marie Callenders. Prices at Norms were less then most other diner type restaurants, but as I learned last night, you get what you pay for.
Cheers,
Marc
