Should have known, French name, what do they know about Irish Soda Bread ... NOTHING.
It started out promisingly enough. The mini loaf wrapped in white paper and tied with Miette's pink ribbon (this should have told me something. Think green).
The loaf was so solid, the knife bent trying to cut it. It was a good workout for my jaw. Instead of currants, there were white raisins and caraway seeds. I tried it plain, I tried it microwaved, I tried it toasted. Nothing helped this bread. AND it was six bucks. An Irish curse on them ... May you be afflicted with the itch and have no nails to scratch with!
I also tried Noe Valley's Irish Soda bread without luck. They have the super puckery type. Actually they have three versions, plain, currant/caraway, and scallion.
I tried a piece of the plain, planning to give the rest to the homeless guy outside (trying to stick to the diet). Well, it really wasn't good enough for the homeless so I fed the rest to the seagulls.
The tops to date are still Virginia Bakery, Boudin and Arizmundi. I understand Neldham's has one, but they were sold out.
