Just returned from the keys where is was less than hot. Have to recommend a place I stopped in after driving most of the night...The Wooden Spoon, MM 51. A complete hole in the wall, restroom out a side door around back, must have been a gas station 50 years ago. But excellent breakfast & lunch grub
(they close up by 1:30 daily).
The first time, all seats were filled so we sat at the bar watching the cooks, which was tantalizing torture, didn't take long to figure out they knew what they were doing-thank you to the food gods that made us unknowingly stop here. They were all over several orders at once, the front & back of the kitchen apparently working through osmosis in spite of a window between.
My husband got a Ruben & Onion rings (at 10:30 in the morning)and his moans of joy were an embarrassment. Not for the faint of heart, though I did see several bowls of fruit being served. I however, tried the chili (delicious), 2 different omelettes-great and finally, I know I'm nuts about this-very good home fries. Corned beef hash, not too salty for a change. And Sweet Tea!!! After the second visit, I announced that if I lived in Marathon I would eat there every day. The prices were so cheap as to make us check the ticket both times, and if you get Lisa, consider it your lucky day. Just good basics, VERY GOOD and masters working the grill. Plus excellent quality ingredients, all the way through. Just don't be scared of the exterior!
Okay, okay, for a decent happy hour if you're around MM 54, try out the Island Tiki Bar, it's got great seafood starters (peel & eat shrimp, oysters, soup)
and $2 coronas, and on the water too boot. Enjoy!
And I only hope it's 10 degrees warmer with no wind on your visit!
