Wolfgang’s new steakhouse– big yawn

Went to Wolfgang’s for the first – and last – time. This is the new steakhouse (33rd and Park) started by the longtime head waiter at Peter Luger. It was just underwhelming. Beautiful space, lots of ornate tilework as if it were the most beautiful subway station imanginable.

We ordered steak for three for $110. Out came this platter with a huge, huge steak. But by the time it was taken off the bone and sliced, we each were presented 4 fork-sized pieces of beef. Given the price, we were all expecting more and were left hungry. And the taste was ok, but nothing special. I’ve had more flavorful steak at much less ambitious restaurants. Great onion rings, though.

Our annoying waiter pulled a wine switch, bringing us a more recent – and cheaper – cabernet from the same vinter than we ordered. We sent the bottle back for the proper year.

A caveat: I don’t particularly like steakhouses (generally too much of a “guy” atmosphere, though Wolfgang’s is far milder than that.) And have never been to Luger’s.

But for a $200 dinner (before tip) for three, I want to be blown away by the food. I wasn't.
