westsidehoundz go to limones (asheville, nc)

another couple, my wife and i headed to limones before going to see susan tedeschi last friday. all in all, it was very, very good.

i had the beef & oregano empanadas with a habenero sauce as my appetizer. very good flavor, but too expensive at $9.75 for two medium-size empanadas. my companions had the marinated olives (tasty) and the ceaser salad, but i can't say we were impressed with the ceaser (it's served with whole anchovies on top, rather than in the dressing - we missed the presence of the anchovy throughout the salad; also it's served as whole leaves of lettuce - while not a big deal for me, my wife can't stand having to cut up her lettuce at the table).

our entrees inluded: the bbq duck tostadas (deemed very good although i wasn't allowed to sample), the vegetarian paella (i liked this one a lot), the sweet potato & vegetable empanadas (we liked the sweet potato one better, but both were good), and i had the relleno stuffed with lamb & sweet pepper ragout (very tasty).

for dessert, the ladies had the sundae (house-made vanilla & chocolate ice cream and a delicious chocolate sauce), and a grilled peach and coconut ice cream concoction (it disappeared so fast i didn't get to taste, but i'm told it was excellent). the guys had a flight of tequilas which are widely avaiable, so i won't comment on them here.

the drinks were excellent. i had a couple of the traditional maragaritas - very smooth and well-balanced. we also tried the blood orange maragarita - i really liked it, but my wife thought it was too tart. the mojito was very good as well (although the places we've had it before serve it with a stick of sugar cane, which we missed in this version).

very good experience. menu changes regularly based on availability so rely on your server if you don't recognize anything. you don't get huge portions here, that said, the ladies couldn't finish their's, and the guys were sated but not stuffed. it's not too expensive IF you watch the bar tab (excluding drinks it's under $30 per person).

oh, and susan tedeschi rocked... so nice to hear someone who can actually sing live and sound as good as (if not better than) her recordings.
