Just wanted to check back with a very timely rec I received from our own Wes. He raved about the George Petrelli's Steak House Burger. I rarely get cravings, but this week I was really in the mood for a burger. I was thinking of giving the newly opened Callender’s at the Hughes Center a try, but since I drive past George’s everyday and have always been curious about it, I figures I’d give it a shot instead.
Now, Wes did a great job describing the burger in his post... he also issues a small warning about the fountain drink policy there. And well, it turns out that wasn’t the only “Policy” they had. I called for a take out order and they said, unless I was on the “list” I had to come in. :/ Luckily I had the time, but still, it was a little bit of pain.
So I went down and ordered their cheese burger, medium with the Grilled Onions (Which is extra) and cased the joint. It was pretty much what I thought it would be. The décor just a step up from your usual Dennys. Nothing fancy with waiters in aprons. I was greeted by a kind older lady who seemed to know everyone who came through the door, sometimes even greeting them in Italian. The bar however, was the coolest part. Black Leather quilted booths. It looked like something out a rat pack picture.
In looking through the menu the prices seemed in line with a mid range steak house. I did like that they put on the menu they recommend their steaks done to medium to preserve flavor and tenderness. A “Policy” I can agree with...
My burger came in a decent time and when I got to work I was so happy to see the monster! The cheese had completely melted into the bun and patty (Not a bad thing) and there was a mound of perfectly grilled onions on the side. Also stuffed in the great container was a heap of steaming fresh fries. It looked wonderful!
I instantly took a look at my take away bag to get mustard and ketchup and some pepper and found, there was none! I guess they don’t do carry out orders often because they didn’t even throw in some napkins in there. So I had my burger and fries plain (The burger did come with a leaf of lettuce and a long pickle slice). Luckily I had a packet of pepper for my fries (But sadly no ketchup)
I cut open the burger and saw a beautiful sight. Beautiful PINK. Done perfect Medium. As for the taste, it was great. The meat was flavorful and the cheese flavor was slight but still there. The Onions were an EXCELLENT touch. So much, that although they charge extra for them, it’s worth getting them.
Sadly, the fries weren’t as good. They were too crisp, almost plastic in texture. I think they have the fry machine on too high. I only ate a few, which wasn’t a bad thing because I was able to eat my burger without getting too stuffed, but next time, I’ll ask for salad instead.
The cheese burger was ~$8 and the onions ~2. My total came $10.50, not the cheapest burger, but not bad for the quality, taste and size!! Good enough for a return visit I say... at least to hang around at that swinging bar... ;)
