When I was in the Bay Area last month, all of the Latin markets I went into in the East Bay had freezer bins full of Mexican-style popsicles. I think they are called "paletas". There were the standard tropical flavors:lime, coconut, mango, watermelon, pineapple, banana. There were others: guava, horchata, rompopo. My all-time favorite? Cucumber with chile. Lightly sweetened frozen cucumber puree spiked with spicy chile. What a mouth surprise-- icy cold and hot at the same time. Very refreshing!
I was in the Latin market/carniceria across from Whole Foods in Arlington yesterday--fabulous chorizo there, by the way, and thick "hecho a mano" tortillas for the huevos rancheros I served for brunch today. But no paletas--only standard "Eskimo Pie"-type frozen treats.
Does anyone know of a place near DC where paletas are sold?
I made the huevos rancheros with duck eggs from Polyface. Unbelievably rich, creamy yolks. They were superb. One of my guests (clearly not a 'hound) ate the egg white and part of the tortilla, and left the egg yolk uneaten. She ate two bites of the homemade refried beans and half the chorizo. Oh, well. Everyone else cleaned their plates. And I'm sure the dog will enjoy that egg yolk in her dinner tonight.
