So I had to take my 16 year old to Dar Maghreb Saturday night for her birthday. As usual, it was great. I absolutley love the salad course. Pureed veggies with Moroccan spices. Yummy! For our meats we chose the honey lamb bacause I can't get enough of it and the shrimp kebabs. The shrimp was awesome! The kabobs came with this spicy sauce that looked like thousand island dressing, but wasn't. It was almost the best shrimp I've ever eaten.
Daughter loved the restaurant and the belly dancers, so it was a success.
Sunday morning had breakfast at the Sofitel. I had eggs bene with spinach and lobster. AWESOME..I didn't want to put the fork down. They used to have the eggs bene served on focaccia bread instead of an english muffin, but I guess they stopped that. Too bad...it was really good. Daughter had homemade oatmeal with fresh blueberries, bananas and strawberries on top. I've forgotten how good oatmeal can be. HB got the egg whites tossed with spinach and portabella shrooms. This was really good. The egg mixture was stuffed into a cylindrical mold and looked beautiful when it was served. I love that the Sofitel serves fresh squeezed oj and grapefruit juice.
So breakfast was a success as well.
Lunch was at Versialles on La Cienega. The place was pretty empty when we got there about 1pm on Sunday. By the time we were done, the place was full. I decided to veer slightly from my regular dish of garlic chicken and ordered the roasted pork and chicken. (same thing) The roasted pork was to die for. It just fell apart when I tried to cut it with my fork. Both meats were covered in thier signature garlic sauce and I wanted to lick the plate.
Daughter had a chicken sandwich that was freakin huge! It was on Cuban bread and served with fries. I think the chicked was lightly floured and fried, but I was too into my own food to notice.
HB had the garlic shrimp. This is officially my new favorite dish. All I need is a bowl of that shrimp and a loaf of bread, and I'm all set for the day. I couldn't stop dunking bread into his sauce...he was getting mad at me and told me to eat my own damn food.
What a baby. :) So, lunch was also a success.
Now, we headed over to Marina Del rey for dinner and a day at the beach. Needless to say, we had a nice dinner planned, but we all fell asleep at 6pm and woke up at 9. We had Mickey D's for dinner.
SO..the next day we drove around looking for a good breakfast place. We ended up at a place called Crestview. It looked decent enough and very full of locals at 9am Monday morning. So we took a chance.
The place was very 70's diner-esque. The menu had regular breakfast staples and a few mexican dishes.
HB opted for the huevos rancheros. I was a bit leary of this dish because the menu said it came with a ranchero sauce on top. What the hell is a ranchero sauce? We found out that it's kind if like green chili stew, only it had celery in it. Strange, to say the least. HB ate it anyway. Ick.
I had the heuvos con chorizo with a side of sour cream. It was decent and it was served with a side of guac which was nice. daughter had a mushroom swiss burger...yes, for breakfast.
The food was mediocre, but my waitress had obviously bore a couple children and decided to wear a t-shirt that did not cover her stretch-marked belly. EWWWWWW. It was really scary. Maybe she doesn't own a mirror.
Later that day we ended up at Fishermans Village and decided to have some snacks at Shanghai Red's.
We sat on the patio, even though it was chilly out.
I ordered the beefsteak salad with was greens topped with med-rare steak, beefsteak tomatoes, a nice hunk of blue cheese, and a barbeque, balsamic dressing. Very good. The lemon garlic croutons were great with the salad and the dressing.
HB had crab rangoon which is basically crab puffs and he also had the steamed clams. The clams were in a basic garlic and white wine broth and were very tasty.
The crab puffs were just OK.
Daughter had crab-stuffed shrooms. they were also, just ok....on the dry side.
Our server disappeared after we got our food, which is a shame. I hate shitty service.
so snack session was sort of a success.
