some waterfront chocolate news--Baked, Almondine, Verandah

The long-awaited Baked (new bakery/cafe from the nice folks behind West Village's Chocolate Bar) will be opening this week, on Jan 12, according to their message machine. They're down on Van Brunt, in Red Hook. And in other chocolate news, dumbo's Almondine does serve JT hot chocolate on sundays, when the JT store is closed. They were swamped with customers when I stopped in around 11 on Sunday--a problem, since the shop had only one counterperson to make coffee drinks, get pastries, and work the register. Nicely, she let me have a half-cup of hot choc for just $1; alas, it was just warm, not hot, and she was too busy for me to ask for the slug of hot milk it desperately needed. So far, the best hot chocolate I've found is right in my backyard (more or less) at the Verandah deli on Clinton St at Congress next to Cobble Hill park. Made with Valrhona chocolate, it's heaven in a $2 cup.
