Before I begin this post, let me just preface it by saying that I do in fact enjoy Water Grill. I think the food and the atmosphere are well presented and most dishes are consistently good across the board.
HOWEVER, I am often left to wonder if diners in LA enjoy Water Grill not so much because it has superlative seafood, but because there are really no other alternatives when it comes to high-end seafood restaurants.
While other fine dining establishments might serve seafood, there really are no other seafood restaurants in the same genre as Water Grill. I mean the Lobster really isn't a fair matchup, is it??
For example in SF, I can think of at least a couple of high-end seafood establishments, e.g. Farallon, Acqua, Plouf, etc. Not so in LA. It can't be geography, at least not in terms of proximity to the ocean, right?
Why the dearth of such seafood restaurants in LA? Thoughts anyone?
*(I don't really consider HK banquet style seafood restaurants like Ocean Star or 888 to be the same, as the experience is entirely different - not better or worse, just different.)
