Need Warm, Soulful, Offbeat, Little-Known Recco in LA

I need an LA area restaurant to recommend, and it has to be special. It's for a friend who's grown jaded with buzzy places, and craves something real. The food must be permeated with love and soulfulness. I don't mean comfort food; the style or cuisine don't matter. It's just got to say something profound and eye-opening.

Ideally the menu shouldn't contain a lot of duds, but if you want to recommend a place where only one thing should be ordered in one way on only one day of the week, that's ok, too.

Owners and staff must be sincerely kind and gracious, too (i.e. not just a cold impersonal pho place with really tremendous pho; I'm looking for full spectrum soulfulness).

Must be a place not widely known among non-hounds.Slightly eccentric or offbeat - or otherwise somehow interesting - would be best.

Thanks in advance for any help!

ciao
