In my search for pecan pies, I purchased a little chocolate pecan pie tart, a small pecan pie with chocolate on top, a small banana cream and a small peanut butter pie. Yes, I now have too much pie......
The best was the little tart. Sticky and chocolaty and probably a little too sweet but still, such nice consistency, I enjoyed it completely. The next best was probably the banana cream. Still, there is a problem waiting to happen with a pie crust and the refrigeration required of banana cream. But it was smooth and nice flavour (not that artificial banana flavour that has put me off in other BCPs) of cream and banana. The crust probably won't do well in my fridge over night but it was crisp if not flakey.
I was least impressed with the other two pies. Peanut butter pie (covered in chocolate or I wouldn't have tried it) requires a person to adore peanut butter in any form. I'm not one of those people and the peanut butteryness was a bit much. Still, not bad; just not a repeat purchase. Peanuts on top a little soft from refrigeration. The pecan pie might be better if I left it out longer to get soft. The filling wasn't as sticky and gooey as I like--more gelatinous. Still, worth trying with more time at room temperature.
Overall, I liked my pecan pie from Dufflets better (nicer texture). And Phipps is so different from the other pecan pies that I won't even try to compare. I'd consider trying to get the chocolate pecan pie again at Wanda's in a larger size.
