Checked out Viking Soul Food on Sunday afternoon for a late-afternoon snack. No crowds at this pod of food stalls, which was nice. We tried the homemade lingonberry iced tea, which was excellent. Refreshing, not too sweet.
We ordered three lefse to share, and one order of pickled herring. I was surprised by the thinness of the lefse, which reminded me of a pancake for mu-si pork, but maybe slightly thicker.
1) Special lefse with sausage, cheese, and other things that I can't remember. It was very good, but not as good as the other two.
2) Akevitt cured, smoked salmon, dill creme fraiche, pickled shallots, and watercress. This was really excellent, especially the bites that contained plenty of the creme fraiche. I really liked the flavor of the salmon, and crunch of the watercress.
3) Lemon curd and spiced pecans. This was probably the single best item I ate all day in Portland. The lemon curd had a nice tang, and wasn't overly sweet. The pecans were spiced with what I think was allspice, which tasted really good with the lemon. I'll have to remember this combo in the future. Every bite was delicious, with perfect textural and flavor combinations. There are few desserts under $10 this good in San Francisco, let alone under $5.
4) Pickled herring. I thought this version was okay, but too sweet. My friend ate most of it. It also wasn't quite as cold as I would have liked it to be, especially on a hot day.
Definitely recommend trying this place—it was worth the trip
