Well, went last night as mentioned in a thread below. Arrived at 6:45 for reservation, and were greeted as if old family, even though my first time eating there. Got a great deuce adjacent to the fireplace which is a perfect spot to see a show, yet have a conversation with a companion and not have to listen to talk all around you. You have to put up with the staff going to and fro the kitchen all the time, though.
Started with a glass of Coppola Zin by the glass as companion wanted the usual Grey Goose on the rocks. Tasted a little overripe for a current release, yet very full in the mouth.
Appetizers were passed on and we went right to the entrees, which in my case was the filet while my companion opted for the porterhouse. Most all entrees are a la carte, meaning the probably 6oz steak was $35, while the porterhouse was $36. Sides options are plentiful, meaning about 8 versions of starch and 8 versions of various non-starch veggies. We opted for the half and half, meaning potato chips and onion rings, and the garlic rapini, each at $8.
My filet ordered rare to med rare was delivered on the higher side at medium rare, yet still very good. Companion's porterhouse was ordered medium rare, and it came a little over where I would have liked it, but still quite acceptable. The non-filet side of the porterhouse was a little tough for me, while my filet was very tender. All steaks, chops, etc. are PRIME and aged 45 days, so the menu says, which is a policy at the Arroyo Chop House in Pasadena which the operaters also own. The half and half was dreadful with no discernable seasoning, semi-cold, and just lifeless, while the rapini was terrific, assuming you like garlic and rapini, in that order.
Each had a glass of Cain Cuvee accompanying dinner, which is quite a nice glass at $14, and for the meal, they bring out the quality stems, which was really appreciated by me.
Dessert selections(all $8) were heavily tilted toward chocolate, which I don't eat, so my options were somewhat limited, yet I opted for an apple-lingonberry pie with a scoop of Doctor Bob's vanilla bean ice cream. Tastes were very good, yet the crust overpowered the fruit and you felt you were eating mostly crust. Good enough, yet would not order again. Companion had a dish of Doctor Bob's ice cream, which included the vanilla bean, a chocolate something, and one other kind.
By this time, it was 8:15 and the Frank Stallone 7-piece group was arriving to set up shop for a 9p.m. show, which we were not staying for, nor did we even know was occuring. We paid no cover charge, yet had a piano/bass duo provide background dinner music from the moment we arrived. Just as we were ready to pay the check and go, who walks in but Frank's brother, Sly, and his entourage, and so of course the place is all abuzz, and by now the place was packed in places not normally packed, meaning including sitting on the fireplace hearth to have a drink to watch the show.
In all, a very nice evening, definitely not cheap ($175 plus tip), and a truly wonderful space done with almost no regard to what it cost to build (Herb Alpert's money as he owns the shopping center where it is located, on Beverly Glen,just south of Mulholland) which also includes a 2nd floor for dining and watching the show. 310.474.9400
