Valentino Pizza in Alexandria

Now that TemptAsian is no longer the lure at 395 and Little River Turnpike, maybe it's time to explore some of the other options.

A right at the next light will put you smack dab in front of the Statue of Liberty and the New York Skyline. Well, it's only a model. But it's on the rooftop of Valentino's Pizza, which has been there at least a year despite the Grand Opening banner out front.

A display case contains a multitude of pizzas by the slice, often with outlandish toppings. I went mainstream and got a slice of Sicilian with marinated tomatoes, onions, and parsley on top, called Papa Joe's special. Also a regular slice with pepperoni, sliced sausage, onion, black olive, and mushroom.

The crust here is impressive. For those of you who put emphasis on a rigid, crispy crust, this will be your Austerlitz. Personally, I am in the very thin crust camp, but this was delicious stuff. Not cheap at all. Slices are hefty and priced at $3.25. One of the few places around I have seen garlic knots on display.
