Coffee shops which don't do boba drinks well shouldn't do them at all.
A while ago, I was at Urth on Main St. and found they served boba drinks, so I dared to try their iced green tea boba drink. Blecch!! The boba was soft on the outside and hard in the middle, and the drink just tasted bad overall.
Anyway, I've yet to run into good boba drinks in cafes which don't specialize in them. And from what I've experienced, it seems it takes a certain knack to get the boba just right, with even some boba specialty shops getting it wrong (e.g. Boba Loca with multiple offenses).
As I crank out this post, I think of all the non-chowhound types who find comfort in their westernized coffee shops, and who may one day decide to try that boba drink on the menu, only to find that it tastes like crap and they'll never order it again.
So shame on you, Urth! Shame on you two times!! If you can't serve it right, don't serve it.
