We've stumbled across a surprising gem here in Champaign-Urbana. Chef Jean Louis is our favorite restaurant in town. The Chef himself is actually Belgian and his menu offers a number of Belgian choices in place the standard french offerings.
The Chef does his magic in an open kitchen visible from most tables. The ambiance is subdued and classy. The service is superbly led by his wife Yvette. The pace is perfectly suited to enjoying your dining experience.
The menu is a stately 3 pages, but most of the "standard" items are available. The specials have been almost universally wonderful. But the real fun is to be had by ordering the 5 or 7 course meal with wine. Different every time, and always divine.
We think Chef Jean Louis compares quite favorably with big city french restaurants. A similar meal in Chicago or NYC would probably cost you double and require reservations far in advance. The only things notably lacking are a fancy dessert menu and a cheese course. Who needs glitz when you can have profiteroles or warm apple tart? Rumour has it a cheese course can be obtained by asking about it in advance.
