Urban Bar-B-Que, closed on a whim

BW | Jun 19, 2005 09:42 PM

We decided to try Urban Bar-B-Que in Rockville for takeout ribs on Father's Day. Tried to call ahead, starting around 3:15, but kept getting the recording. (It said the hours are 11 to 8 Sunday through Thursday and 11 through 9 on Friday and Saturday.) We figured the place was mobbed, and we kept trying. We kept getting the recording. "We close at 8."

We got there at 4:10, and they turned us away.

"We close at 4!" said the girl in front of the "We close at 8" sign.

"No, you don't."

"Um, yes. That's not a real holiday. In fact, it's an opportunity to sell more than you usually sell."

It's the owners' prerogative to close whenever the heck they please, but if they're going to answer the phone with a recording, EVEN WHILE THEY'RE STILL OPEN, they might want to change the recording to reflect any sudden changes in their closing time.
