Upscale, quiet dinner for grandma's 80th birthday between 20s and Tribeca?

I'm looking for recommendations for restaurants that might be good for hosting a dinner for 8 to 10 in a quiet environment with excellent food and great service.

If we had the budget, we would do something like Daniel - calm, fine dining, European (or possibly American) cuisine. Price wise we are looking for something in the $$$ as opposed to $$$$ range.

The group is interested in something no further north than the 20s, and willing to travel as far south as Tribeca. I had thought of Maialino or Gramercy Tavern, but have not been to either.

Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated! I am a 20-something who is more familiar with Brooklyn area restaurants and young, hip, excessively loud establishments in the city.

Thanks in advance!
