The Picnic Hounds | Aug 13, 2003 11:35 AM

Update:
I just wanted to let y’all know that registration has only been open one week and the picnic is half-full. We’d love to have you (and your delicious dish) at the picnic so register today!

Original Invitation:
For most of us, Chowhound is invaluable with tips, opinions, thoughts, suggestions and directions to places we’d never otherwise encounter. Now’s the chance to meet and eat with all those people whose posts you know and trust. It’s time for a picnic — a serious chowdown with all your new and old chowfriends.

When: Saturday, October 4, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Where: Golden Gate Park. The exact site location and directions will be e-mailed upon payment.

Who: Both old-timers and newcomers are encouraged to attend! Chowhounds are fun and friendly people who will make you feel welcome. Invitations extend to one Chowhound, plus a spouse or a friend, and their children.

Why: To raise money for Chowhound.com, ensuring the survival and quality of our quest for hyperdeliciousness.

More Details: Registration is open! Just click on the link below.

The cost is a $30 donation per adult. One child under 12 is free for each paid adult admission. Everyone will get to share in the potluck of Chowhounds’ favorite foods, participate in a tasting event, plus nonalcoholic drinks, park fees, etc. After costs, all the money will go to a Goodwill contribution to our favorite site.

Here are the activities planned:
(more may be added as we finalize plans for the premier Chowing with the Hounds event of 2003.)

Food Contest

Each adult is asked to bring a dish to share with others. Then everyone will vote for the most delectable of delectables. Certificates will be awarded for achievement in the following categories: appetizer, entrée, side dish (vegetable or salad), bread (includes pizza & sandwich), and dessert. Additionally, prizes will be awarded for the overall favorite entry and best store-bought discovery.

Tastings

Chowing with the Hounds’ picnic feast would not be complete without a tasting to puzzle the taste buds. This year we’ll learn about apples by sampling a wide variety.

Food Demonstration

We're still working the logistics of this one out, so I can't say too much...ok, maybe a little....it has to do with heat, smoke and pig.

Cookbook

We’re once again creating a cookbook and we would love to include the recipe for the dish you bring. Every hound that attends the picnic will receive an electronic copy of cookbook. It will include recipes from both this and last year’s picnics. (We'll also compile and distribute the list of purchased food and where you can get them!)

What To Bring

* Food:

A shared dish to feed 20. If you don’t know what to make or don’t have time, you are welcome to bring prepared foods from your favorite outlet. The barbecue from down the street, the bread from the bakery across town, the ice cream from your favorite parlor, whatever. Your dish will automatically be entered in The Food Contest. See registration form for sign ups.

* Equipment/Supplies needed for your dish:

Bring serving utensils for your dish. If you need special equipment, please bring it. For example, coals, lighter fluid and tongs if you wish to barbecue.

* Personal Picnic Supplies:

Bring the following items for yourself: plate, bowl, cutlery, napkins, cup/glass/drinking container. You may bring wine and/or beer (hard liquors are not allowed in the park). You may also wish to bring a blanket and/or a chair.

* Your volunteering spirit:

We need every Chowhound to volunteer for an assignment to help with the picnic. With all pitching in each person’s task will be minimal. See registration for sign ups.

Let’s gather and chow!
