Help! Unusual Spice Used at China Star...

Last weekend, a trip to Rockville resulted in my ordering takeout from the famous Joe’s Noodle House. Got the “Spicy Noodle w/Spinach and Ground Pork.” Tasty, but had a funny mouth feeling while eating it. Went to drink some water and had the most bizarre thing happen – the water tasted carbonated. Yuck. This was my own water bottle from home. I brought the leftovers home and the same thing happened with a different supply of water.

Well, ate at China Star yesterday (for the fourth time) and the same thing happened to me. This time from the filet mignon with sour mustard. I was going along just fine enjoying another wonderful dinner at this amazing restaurant, and then I got a bite of meat from the top of the bowl. It looked like it was sprinkled with some red spice as well as some brown spice. The flavor was very strong. Again, my water subsequently tasted carbonated, and the sensation stayed with me, ruining the rest of my meal. I thought maybe I was crazy (or allergic) until my spouse sampled some of the meat from the top and experienced the same thing. He said it was very off-putting, as well.

So, I beg you chowhounds, please tell me what the offending spice is so I may safely enjoy my future meals at these Chinese gems. I assume I will be permitted to get my food without it.
