'unique health food and fresh juice bar'

i had dinner last night at 'unique', a poorly named but definitely chowworthy place. its just east of ashland on fullerton. katie, the owner is korean and by her account something of a medicine woman. her menu is a little bit all over the map, but she is dedicated to natural chow. i ordered the oriental(her word) dumpling soup. it seemed pricey at $7.50. but it contained at least 6 superb shrimp. she makes everything from scratch, including the dumplings and strange soft strips that she said were brown rice cake strips. it was delicious and aesthetically pleasing. each vegetable was cut differently, the chicken broth(only natural chickens used here) was rich. her menu includes fruit smoothies, salads, several vegetarian dishes and entrees such as marinated codfish, bbq salmon, brisket new orleans style(no idea what that is), with vegetables, roll, soup or salad and brown rice. entrees are in the $8-$11 range.

i have 2 concerns. one, she is a non stop talker, and because i was the only customer she wouldnt allow me to eat in peace. she was extremely pleasant and concerned about healthy cooking and eating, but i hope she's in the kitchen next time i visit. the other thing is that she may be doing too much 'a la minute', as my soup took 25 minutes to arrive, tho she had only 1 other customer ahead of me. a family with 2 young children was finishing up as i arrived. they all loved their meal. the boy said it was now his favorite restaurant. i will go back, and wish katie well. i hope the food comes out of the kitchen a little quicker as she gets things organized. (its been open only 2-3 weeks, and she had to fire her first chef. she hopes to hire a chef soon. 'unique', 1532 w. fullerton, 935-9661, closed tuesdays. open 11am.
