The Theater District's Pam Real Thai will introduce a new menu starting tomorrow. It will include many, many Thai dishes that seldomly appear on American (much less NYC) Thai restaurant menus. These dishes tend to be worlds spicier, more delicious and more exotic than many of Pam's "regular" menu items (which can occasionally misfire because of either a harried kitchen or an effort to please the bland tastes of the average theatergoing patron).
Pam insiders have been enjoying these new dishes for years. Some have appeared as staff meals, daily specials or by request only. But now the off-the-menu goodness will be availible to the general public.
Those Hounds constantly grousing about Westernized Thai food should try the small fried mackerels or the canned-sardine salad. It does not get any more homestyle.
Less funky and tastier, pad cha talay (slivered ginger, fried lime leaf and mixed seafood), Muslim yellow-curry rice with chicken and salad (a sort of Islamic Thai paella), and several new unusual soups and noodle dishes are also recommended. And if your stomach can handle it, try the ground meat with extra-spicy holy basil--tell them to make it as hot as possible.
Of course, you must specify that you want these dishes really spicy and homestyle, and for maximum zing and quality, try to avoid ultrabusy dinner hours and weekends. You won't be sorry for the little bit of extra effort. Most of this stuff is on par with the more celebrated restaurants out in Queens.
