The Mr. And I are just finishing up a ten day trip to central Tuscany. I'm a long time lurker and have benefitted immensely from other's reports. So, while I drink my coffee and procrastinate packing, I thought I would share some of the wonderful places we found.
I should start by saying all the food was good. It's hard to go wrong here. We are based in Montepulciano, so most of our restaurants are there, but we did venture out to some of the surrounding towns.
>La Grotta - The best food of the trip. It was so good, we went back the next night. The vegetable tart was amazing and my husband very much enjoyed the pate on crostini. It's just outside of town, across from San Biagio.
>Le Logge del Vignola - Very good. We would have gone back for a second meal if we had not found the Grotta. I really enjoyed the pork loin with olive oil ice cream and the ricotta gnocchi. It's in the center of town near the post office.
>Osteria del Conte - We stumbled on this place when we realized almost every place in town is closed on Tuesdays. It was very good, a little more relaxed then the previous two.
>Gattavecchi - this place came highly recommended and although it was good, we had better meals elsewhere.
>Antico Cafe Poliziano - Great place for a light lunch or a sweet snack. They have amazing pastries. It's right in the center of town.
>Latte di Luna - We had a great lunch here on a day outing. It was obviously very popular. I had a wonderful mushroom soup and they brought us complimentary homemade ice cream after our meal.
>La Porta - We stopped in here for some bruschetta and a glass of wine after touring this teeny tiny town. I think there may only be two restaurants in town and the other was closed. The highlight of the place is the amazing view of the valley from their terrace.
We also went to Florence and Arezzo but there are tons of great dining options there and I didn't record where we went. Our last day, we are off to Siena.
A couple of suggestions, the hand rolled pasta, Pici is very good here. Also, it's Porcini season so many of the restaurants have extra menu items with the fresh mushrooms.
